Bridgeport Covered Bridge
Pioneers and gold-seekers were
dependent on river crossings for the transportation of supplies,
livestock, and people between the cities and gold camps.
The Bridgeport Covered Bridge was built in 1862 as a toll bridge. It
was built of Douglas fir timbers and Sugar Pine shakes. Bridges were
covered to protect the wood. At 229 feet, it is the world's longest
single span truss/arch covered bridge.
You can still walk across this wonderful piece of Gold Country history and
stop at the visitor center to learn more about the great gold mining days.
During the summer they show you how to pan for gold and the shop is filled
with gifts as well as the history of the bridge and the Yuba River. For
swimming, fishing and naturally gold panning there are many parks and great
spots to take your picnic lunch & just enjoy the area. You can climb the
trails and get fabulous views of the Yuba River as shown by many of the
photos on the following page. This is not far from
Lake Wildwood.
